Four area high school students recently completed courses at East Arkansas Community College in Forrest City that enabled them to pass the national certification test known as CIW or Certified Internet Web at the Associate Level.

The students were required to pass three courses that led to their certifications as part of the Secondary Career Center program at EACC. The students enrolled in the program attended afternoon classes Monday-Friday at EACC and after successfully completing the courses, received credit for both high school and college (known as concurrent credit). Hours earned for the college credits may count toward a degree, certificate or advanced certification program. Local high school districts provide transportation for the student’s convenience. The classes were taught by instructor Debbie Feagin.

EACC currently provides students with associate specialist level, associate level, and professional levels of certification and will offer the master designer level of certification in the spring semester 2009. To become certified as CIW, the students completed Internet Business Foundations, Network Technology Foundations and Introduction to Web Page Design classes.

CIW Associates have mastered the fundamental knowledge and skills to work in an Internet technology-enabled environment. These foundational skills include basic knowledge of Web browsers, email, Web page authoring, basic infrastructure networking and project management. This certification will help prepare these students for a career working in Web-based industries.

CIW is recognized as the Internet standard for certification by academic institutions, corporations, commercial learning centers, industry associations and media.
